Are you ready for the quintessentially hot hatchback to go electric? Volkswagen is preparing the segment with its retro-style ID. GTI Concept at the IAA Mobility 2023, which aims to build a bridge between 48 years of combustion-powered GTI history and VW’s electric future.

If the red car pictured here looks familiar, you’re probably thinking of the VW ID. 2all concept that was launched earlier this year. The similarity is no coincidence – Volkswagen designers actually had the GTI in mind when developing this concept, and so you’ll find essentially the same features here, albeit with black and red trim. There are sportier dashboards front and rear and it rides on wheels inspired by the Mk1 GTI. The taillights are darker and a sash on top of the hatch blends in with the black trim around the window. The radiator grille is also darkened with red decorative stripes and of course the GTI logo can be found everywhere.

At this point we would like to tell you about the motivation behind the skin of this racy red hatchback. For now, VW has nothing to say other than that it’s a single-engine, high-performance powertrain that features an electronic differential lock for the front wheels. Additionally, GTI Experience Control offers a wide range of customization options, allowing you to customize everything from the suspension to steering feel and sound, and even create simulated shift points to mimic GTIs of decades past.

Speaking of decades gone by, you’ll find even more retro goodness inside, and not just in the checkered seats. The ID. The 2all’s dual-screen digital interior remains, but VW offers multiple settings for the ID. GTI concept including classic instrument display. Fancy cruising in a Mk2 GTI? You can set it up, and should you find yourself at the Nürburgring, for example, an advanced head-up display will project a route map into the bottom corner of the windshield. Meanwhile, the passenger can follow the lap times… also projected onto the windshield.

Whether this technology will make it into production is unknown, but VW says the interior layout with the 12.9-inch center screen, 10.9-inch driver screen and selection of physical controls are near-production items. The car manufacturer also emphasizes the ID. The GTI concept is a “first look at the exciting GTI future as the decision has been made that it will go into production.” And while this concept focuses on performance, VW reminds us that it is always is still a practical hatchback model that offers space for five people and 17.3 cubic feet of storage space in the trunk.

When will this concept become reality? This is also a topic that VW is not yet ready to discuss. There will be a foretaste of the future at the IAA Mobility 2023, where the ID. GTI Concept will be on display from September 5th.
