Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s refusal Wednesday, April 13, to denounce a “genocide” by the Russian army in Ukraine. “If they are true, such statements are very hurtful for us,” the Ukrainian president said at a joint press conference with the heads of state of Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia during a visit to Kyiv.
“I will do my best to raise this issue with Emmanuel Macron today. If not, then tomorrow if he finds time,” added Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Emmanuel Macron opted earlier in the day not to use the term “genocide” used by his American counterpart Joe Biden. “I would say that Russia started a brutal war unilaterally, that it is now clear that war crimes were committed by the Russian army and that we now need to find those responsible,” he said.
And the President continued: “It’s crazy what’s happening, it’s incredibly brutal (…) but at the same time I look at the facts and I want to try as much as possible to continue to stop this war and to be able to rebuild the peace, so I am I’m not sure the escalation of words serves the cause”.
