Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims Ukraine shot down over 80 Russian drones

Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims Ukraine shot down over 80 Russian drones in two days

The Ukrainian president confirmed that his country had come under multiple attacks over the past two nights and hoped “terrorists’ target will fail”.

“Nights can be pretty restless these weeks.” A fresh airstrike targeted Kyiv at dawn Monday, after a New Year’s Day marked by dozens of Russian attacks in Ukraine, killing at least five and injuring dozens.

This Monday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his daily address to the Ukrainian people that his country’s air defenses shot down more than eighty “Iranian drones”.

“It has only been two days since the beginning of the year and the number of Iranian drones shot down over Ukraine is already over eighty, he claimed, before adding that that number could rise in the near future.”

The risk of a “protracted attack”

The President of Ukraine also revealed that, according to Ukrainian data, for more than ten months in this open conflict, Russia decided to “bet on the exhaustion of the people, air defense and the energy sector”.

“We have information that Russia is planning a prolonged attack with ‘Shaheds’ (Iranian drones used by Russia, editor’s note),” he said.

But he called on the Ukrainian people to “make sure – and we will do everything we can to do this – that this terrorist target fails like all others”.

Shortly before and after the transition to 2023 on Sunday, at least five people were killed and 50 injured in bombing raids on Kyiv and seven other regions, according to Ukrainian authorities. Moscow, for its part, claimed to have targeted drone production facilities.

63 Russian soldiers died on New Year’s Eve

In response to numerous Russian attacks on energy infrastructure over the past several weeks, Ukraine bombed a “temporary deployment center” of the Russian army in a Russian-held city east of the separatist stronghold of Donetsk on the night of Saturday to Sunday.

Russia on Monday conceded the deaths of 63 of its soldiers in Ukraine, the heaviest casualties in a single attack Moscow admitted since the invasion began.

The Ukrainian army, which claimed responsibility for the attack, spoke of a much higher toll, which it says could amount to up to 400 soldiers killed.
