Sloviansk is an iconic city because it was occupied by pro-Russian separatists armed by Moscow for a few months in 2014 before being taken over by the Ukrainians. Sloviansk is also 45 kilometers from Bakhmout, which Russian forces have been attempting to capture with extensive destruction since the summer, so far without success.
