Interior Minister’s work brings clear negotiation success at EU level – Vienna must end undifferentiated welcome policy
Vienna (OTS) – “The outcome of the meeting of interior ministers in Luxembourg led to the first European agreement. A big thank you to Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, who pushed these solutions forward with great vigour,” said the President of the State Party, Karl Mahrer, in view of the important landmark of the negotiations in Luxembourg.
An important first step has been taken on core asylum issues and agreement has been reached on strengthening EU asylum rules.
This important result is mainly due to the insistence and efforts of Austria and the People’s Party. The success of the negotiations on Austria’s behalf also underscores once again that the People’s Party is still clearly the driving force behind the rethink in Europe. In contrast to Herbert Kickl’s Freedom Party, which wants to score points with populism and controversy and offers no substantive solutions, Interior Minister Karner has now shown what is really possible through alliances with allies and constructive discussions.
“Vienna, in particular, faces huge challenges in the area of integration. Due to decades of looking the other way from the Viennese SPÖ, this development could come as a significant relief. SPÖ and neos are called upon to do their part of the homework: end the unlimited welcome policy, reduce pull factors and consistent integration measures”, concludes Mahrer.
