VR, for Virtual Reality, is a technology that is both promising and sobering. Since the first VR headsets, the market promises to explode, find outlets in the professional field, revolutionize video games or the way we consume content.
But the sales figures show that it’s still a very small market. Only 9.6 million helmets were sold in 2022, down 12% from the previous year. We therefore remain largely in a niche market with the Pico 4, despite a drop in the entry ticket to 400 euros. However, this is not surprising given the limitations: gaming space, dedicated device and social isolation.
PS VR2 was not meant to be a game changer
This week we released our review of the PlayStation VR 2, Sony’s second VR headset, and it’s a testament to the struggles of this market. The device is technologically mature, but we don’t think Sony is ready to invest fully in software monitoring, with big first-party titles at launch. What should one wonder about the expediency of buying such an object.
Beyond the simple question of VR is the question of mixed reality or MR, which could explode the potential. Meta has already invested a lot in this little game with its Meta Quest Pro. We’re also awaiting news from Apple, which is rumored to have its first headset with mixed reality capabilities. However, let’s not forget that this is an Arlesian who has been piling up rumors for years.

For these reasons, we decided to ask your opinion on VR. Due to the idiosyncrasies of the medium, some of its promises might be tempted in-game or elsewhere. Others may be a little afraid of this not-yet-cleared area. Maybe they’re waiting for Apple to lay the groundwork for the rest of the industry?
