“Waiting for the Village Party”: Matthieu Pepper did well at its Montreal premiere

Despite repeating his kindergarten year, Matthieu Pepper successfully, to say the least, returned to Montreal on Tuesday evening to the stage of L’Olympia, where he presented his first solo show.

The 33-year-old comedian, discovery of the year at the last Les Olivier Gala, presented a well-crafted and fast-paced show in which he used supposed self-irony and razor-sharp gags to deal with some embarrassing complexes, such as his enuresis, which caused him to… wet the bed at the age of 16.

Since Matthieu Pepper wrote his lyrics alone, he was able to gather the troops in his number at the grocery store, in which he admits to stealing the basket of a lady who had stopped to read a label, and in the one in which he reveals that he was his Head makes his erotic dreams “trashy”, like the time he dreamed that he was making love on an island, but his boat crashed into a rock upon arriving near the shore and his companion in the accident died.

The number dedicated to the dog park and dog owners was a safe bet. Many in the room recognized this Jeff, who describes himself as a wolfdog owner and punctuates his sentences with cigarette puffs and shouts to get his dog to order, or even this Caro, who describes herself as a wolf trainer. dogs and who criticizes everything others do. She’s also the one who walks around with a bag of treats and congratulates her dog with kibble and “Good boy.”

His father’s death

The title of his show, “Waiting for the Village Festival,” recalls the idea of his father, who, shortly before his death in the palliative care home, asked that “a village festival” be organized for him to celebrate life, surrounded by loved ones .

The comedian behind the series “Entre deux drapes” portrays him, unlike his friends’ fathers who were always “frustrated”, as a rosy, sensitive man who interfered in the lives of his young people, who made him enthusiastic about blooming lilacs and with which he tried as best as he could to watch the monster trucks in the Olympic Stadium.

The wait for this first one-man show will hardly have been worth it. Matthieu Pepper, who we quickly become attached to, lived up to expectations, even if he begged the crowd to lower them as he took the stage.

The audience laughed heartily with him throughout the evening, which ended without a break and without a flop.

The show ended with Still Alive by Gerry Boulet, while comedian PO Forget warmed up the room.

Matthieu Pepper will be making stops throughout Quebec next year. To see the dates: https://www.matthieupepper.com/.
