Torrential rain fell in the Gaza Strip. They caused flooding, particularly in the Jabaliya camp near Gaza City. In Rafah, the displaced Palestinians, swept away by rain and icy winds, are overwhelmed by desperation.
The Gaza Strip was hit by heavy rains. The water level rose very high very quickly. The Jabaliya camp near Gaza City is stormed by bad weather after weeks of bombing. For those who were forced to leave their homes to seek refuge in a camp in Rafah on the border with Egypt, it is the same ordeal. Battered by rain and icy winds, the displaced are overwhelmed by despair.
“I have eight children, all eight are sick”
During a lull everyone takes out their clothes and blankets to try to dry the few things they brought with them. The children dig meager little trenches around the tents to prevent water from entering their fragile habitat. “I have eight children, all eight of them are sick. I don't know what to do, I don't know where to go,” complains Khitam Abassi, a displaced Palestinian. Rockets fired by Hamas into Israel whistle above their heads.
