Will the Ukrainian offensive begin soon? Ukrainian authorities on Wednesday, May 3, announced the imposition of a 58-hour curfew in Kherson near the frontline in the south of the country. “From 8 p.m [heure locale] A curfew will be imposed in Kherson on May 5, which will last until 6 a.m. on May 8,” the head of the local military administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, told Telegram.

“During these 58 hours it is forbidden to move and be on the city streets. Kherson will also be closed at the entrance and exit,” he added. Oleksandre Prokoudin justified “these temporary restrictions” with “the need” that “the police must be able to do their job” without giving further details.

Rumors of a major Ukrainian offensive

However, this announcement by the authorities comes at a time when Kiev is asserting that its preparations for a major offensive to retake the Russian-held territories to the east and south are “coming to an end”.

Russia still occupies almost 20% of Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula annexed in 2014. For its part, Kherson was liberated last November after a successful counter-offensive by Kiev in the region. Since then, this city has been regularly bombed as the Russian army stands just across the Dnieper, a river that now acts as a natural front line.
