A residential building in Kiev was hit by an explosive drone in a new Russian night strike on Thursday, December 21, Ukrainian authorities said. The capital's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported two injuries. A resident of the Solomiansky district in the southwest of the city was hospitalized. Another was treated medically on site, said Vitali Klitschko.

It is the first incident of its kind in the Ukrainian capital in months. While the city of Kiev is regularly the target of Russian drone and missile attacks, most of them are shot down by air defenses. In total, “Russian occupation troops attacked with 28 Shahed drones on the night from Thursday to Friday,” the Ukrainian Air Force said. 24 of these Iranian-made drones “were shot down.”

Damage caused by splinters

The air alarm was triggered late on Thursday evening in Kiev. Shortly afterwards, residents heard loud explosions. City Hall initially announced that air defense was deployed in the city and urged residents to stay in emergency shelters. The city's military administration published photos on Telegram of apartments with bay windows blown out by the explosions. She said it was not a drone attack, but rather shrapnel from a downed drone that caused a fire. Drone strikes also caused damage to a building in southern Kiev and a private home, with no fatalities.
