In Ukraine, fighting in the Donbass has intensified and casualties are piling up. The 20 hours went to the Lysychansk military hospital on the front lines.
Thick columns of smoke can be seen on the border of the city of Lysychansk (Ukraine). Military ambulances run the wounded from the front lines to a military hospital, where few journalists have been seen. It took an ambulance seven minutes to pull a soldier out of the fighting. The injured person is conscious. After a scan, he is relieved: he has no shrapnel in his head.
In the room used for emergencies, three more soldiers have already been evacuated from the trenches. A doctor recounts the damage Russian artillery inflicts on his men: “It crushes bones, it cuts arteries, it tears tissue, and we amputate a lot.” The slightly injured are resting in one of the sickrooms. A soldier has shrapnel in his foot but doesn’t want to stop fighting: “There are guys who are dead and I’m alive, so of course I’m going back.”
