War in Ukraine: Kiev publishes images of a suspected Russian hypersonic missile

Ukraine said on Tuesday it shot down 10 Russian-fired Kinjal missiles in a wave of massive attacks on Ukrainian cities, killing six people.

Ukraine released images on Friday of what it said was a Russian Kinjal hypersonic missile, 10 of which it said it shot down in massive attacks on Tuesday using the US Patriot anti-aircraft system.

Ukraine's emergency department published photos on its Telegram channel showing a crane removing the remains of a rocket from the ground.

“In Kiev, engineers neutralized the warhead of an enemy Kinjal hypersonic missile,” the government agency said.

AFP could not immediately verify the Ukrainian claims.

Ten Russian Kinjal missiles were launched this week

Ukraine said on Tuesday it shot down 10 Russian-fired Kinjal missiles in a wave of massive attacks on Ukrainian cities, killing six people.

It had already claimed in May and June 2023 to have destroyed other Russian Kinjals thanks to the powerful and expensive Patriot anti-aircraft system supplied by the USA.

Described as “invincible” by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018, these projectiles are fired from Russian MiG-31 fighter jets and are said to travel at more than five times the speed of sound, or over 6,000 km/h.

According to the British Ministry of Defense, Moscow reserves these warheads “for what it considers to be high-value and well-defended targets.”
