Kiev was hit by rockets during a visit by UN chief Guterres
During the visit of UN Secretary General António Guterres to Kiev, the city was hit by rocket fire. Several people were injured in the process.
For the first time in about two weeks, Kiev was again hit by rockets on Thursday. The mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitali Klitschko, spoke about two Russian attacks in the center of the city on Thursday night on the Telegram online service. AFP reporters at the scene heard an explosion and saw a fire in a building and several broken windows. According to preliminary information, several people were injured in the attack.
UN chief shocked by rocket launch
At the time of the rocket launch, UN Secretary General António Guterres was in Kiev and had just met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Guterres told the BBC after the explosions that he was shocked.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter about a “hateful act of barbarism”. Thus, Kiev was targeted with cruise missiles. “Russia has once again shown its attitude towards Ukraine, Europe and the world,” Kuleba wrote.
Call for Russia to be barred from UN Security Council after rocket fire in Kiev
After the bombing, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mikhail Podoliak called for Russia to be stripped of its seat on the UN Security Council. “Rockets hit the center of Kiev during Antonio Guterres’ official visit,” he wrote on Twitter. “Yesterday he was still sitting at a long table in the Kremlin and today there were explosions above his head,” he added, referring to the UN secretary-general.
