War in Ukraine, live: Kherson authorities encourage residents to evacuate area

Local authorities are encouraging people to leave Kherson

The city council of Kherson in southern Ukraine on Friday evening asked residents to leave the city and surrounding communities because of repeated attacks by the Russian army.

Russian troops continue to terrorize our territorial community. Most affected are places near the Dnieper River. Due to the constant attacks, it is hardly possible to guarantee a stable supply of heat and water there. The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to evacuate to safer places.

According to Oleksandr Prokudin, governor of the Kherson region, Russia attacked Ukrainian-held areas of the region 74 times in 24 hours, firing 423 heavy artillery shells and Grad multiple rocket launchers.

According to the governor, the city of Kherson was hit four times, and “twelve shells hit residential areas, private homes and a medical facility.” One person was killed and 87 people were evacuated from the oblast, Prokudin said on Telegram.

Areas on the west bank of the Dnieper were liberated by Ukrainian forces in November 2022. Russian forces were pushed back to the east bank of the river, from where they are firing on the liberated areas.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Kherson region on Thursday, the day after a trip to the Eastern Front. In particular, he went to Posad-Pokrovske, a place occupied by Moscow troops until the fall of 2022 and significantly destroyed.
