War in Ukraine, live: Russia sends drones to Odessa and digs trenches in Crimea

  • Finland today becomes the 31st member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), announced its Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. For its part, Russia has said it will increase its military capabilities near Finland following NATO enlargement.
  • According to the American newspaper “Washington Post” Moscow ordered the construction of several kilometers of trenches around Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014. The daily reports that many job vacancies have been posted targeting construction workers with an attractive salary of $90 a day, which is rare in the region. According to satellite images, Moscow could have dug these trenches within days.
  • Russia attacked Ukraine with 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones during the night from Monday to Tuesday, the command of the Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement, noting that the air defense systems destroyed 14 of these drones. Yuri Krouk, head of the regional military administration of the port city of Odessa, reported on his administration’s Facebook page that “there is one[vait] damage”.
  • Celso Amorim, adviser to Brazilian President Lula, met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow on March 25 to talk about Ukraine, a presidency source in Brasilia told AFP on Monday, April 3. According to the same source, Mr Amorim also had lunch with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is expected in Brazil on April 17.
  • Russian paramilitary group Wagner claimed responsibility for capturing Bakhmout town hall on Monday morning, in eastern Ukraine, and claimed that this conquest meant he now legally controlled the city. For its part, the Ukrainian army claimed to have “repelled more than twenty enemy attacks” and “valiantly held the city”.
  • The suspect Daria Trepova is said to have brought the statuette that exploded in Saint Petersburg Russian ultra-nationalist blogger Vladlen Tatarski was killed on Sunday. She spoke in a video released Monday after her arrest by Russia’s Interior Ministry.
