War in Ukraine: Missiles fly towards Kiev, alarms sound across the country

The authorities had previously issued an air alert for the entire country due to the threat from active Russian bombers.

The warnings follow each other. This Tuesday morning, the Ukrainian army reported that rockets were flying towards Kiev. The authorities had previously issued an air alert for the entire country due to the threat from active Russian bombers. At least ten powerful explosions were heard in the capital.

The explosions shook buildings in the city center. The capital's military administration also said that fragments of fired rockets fell in various parts of the city, especially in residential areas.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said several parts of the city were now without power.

Moscow and Kiev have seen an escalation of violence in recent days, with an unprecedented attack 24 dead on Saturday in Belgorodin Russia, after a missile attack on Ukraine on Friday that Kiev described as “massive” and left about forty people dead.

Ukraine on alert

Hours earlier, the military had warned that Russian strategic bombers were in the air.

“Missile danger in areas where there is an air alert! Danger from cruise missile launches from Tu-95MS aircraft. A total of 16 Tu-95MS strategic bombers are in the air,” the Air Force statement on Telegram said.

After launches were reported from Olenia (northwest) and Engels (southwest) in Russia, several Tupolev Tu-95MS aircraft were in Russian airspace, Ukrainian military officials reported on Telegram. Four Tu-22M3 bombers also left the Russian base at Chaïkovka near the Belarusian border.
