The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, February 13, called on French people living in Belarus to “leave the country immediately,” he announced in an official press release.

In view of the closure of Belarusian airspace, the Quai d’Orsay advises leaving Belarus “by road via border crossings with Lithuania, Poland or Latvia”. “Passengers arriving by plane must apply for an exit visa from the offices of the Belarusian Interior Ministry, if necessary,” the ministry further specifies.

This advice comes as Moscow seeks to include Minsk in its military action against Ukraine, while Belarus is already serving as a base for Russian forces. The two countries had also held joint military exercises over the past month, with Minsk asserting they were “defensive” in nature.

Also on Monday, Washington urged its nationals not to travel to or reside in Russia because of the risk of “imprisonment” or even “terrorism.” “The ability of the United States government to provide emergency assistance to American citizens in Russia is extremely limited,” the US Embassy in Moscow said in a statement.
