War in Ukraine Russia and the specter of nuclear power

War in Ukraine, Russia and the specter of nuclear power, Crosetto: "Nobody is afraid of nuclear war"

“All technicians tend to believe that no one really thinks about the use of nuclear weapons. On a rational level this is so, there is certainly nothing that can be done about the madness, but today no one is afraid of an escalation that could lead to a nuclear war.” Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said this in his speech at the Festival of Cities, which was organized by Ali (Italian local authorities).

Putin is flexing his muscles

However, in recent days Russia has raised the specter of nuclear power several times and accelerated its race to produce new nuclear weapons. President Vladimir Putin himself made this known by proclaiming that the Russian nuclear agency “Rosatom is committed to developing advanced weapons capable of maintaining strategic balance in the world.”

Moscow ready for missile test?

Russian threats would not only stop in the race for new military equipment. According to rumors in the New York Times, Moscow may be ready to test a nuclear missile. Based on insights from satellite images and aviation data, it could be preparing to test – or even recently had one tested – a cruise missile that can be armed with a small nuclear warhead and, on paper, has a range of thousands of kilometers.
