A sudden turn in a war that has been going on for more than a year and a half. In fact, Russia is ready to start negotiations with Ukraine to end the ongoing crisis because it “prefers diplomatic and political means.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov officially stated this on RTVI. Putin, Peskov emphasized, “has repeatedly stated that the most important thing for us is to achieve our goals.” And of course we would prefer to do this primarily through political and diplomatic means. That’s why we remain ready to negotiate.” Peskov then argued that the negotiation process had been interrupted by Kiev: “They themselves admitted that this happened at the behest of Great Britain, the British.” Therefore, the situation is quite obvious.
In the meantime, the Kremlin is not ruling out Vladimir Putin’s participation if, as is now taken for granted, he actually appears in the presidential elections in March and at the G20 summit in Brazil next November. No decision has yet been made on the form of the Russian president’s intervention. Brazil has joined the International Criminal Court, which has issued an arrest warrant for Putin in connection with the deportation of Ukrainian minors to Russia. However, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has already made it clear that the invitation to Putin is still being formalized. The last time Putin personally attended a G20 summit was in Japan in 2019. Last month, he addressed the extraordinary G20 summit convened via video link by the Indian presidency. Since March, when the arrest warrant was issued, Putin has only traveled to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, China and Belarus; tomorrow he will head to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
