War in Ukraine: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visits Kiev

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez arrived in Ukraine on Thursday to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the eve of the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Upon arrival in Kiev, Pedro Sanchez was received by Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister, the Ukrainian ambassador in Madrid and the Spanish ambassador to Ukraine, his office said in a statement.

Pedro Sanchez’s visit comes after US President Joe Biden pledged $500 million in new military aid to Ukraine during a surprise visit to Kiev on Monday.

Italian Council President Giorgia Meloni also traveled to the Ukrainian capital on Tuesday to meet Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

She promised to continue to support her resistance to Russian attacks, but ruled out providing fighter jets.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said on Wednesday that Madrid would supply Ukraine with six German-made Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks after repairs, with deliveries scheduled for late March or early April.
