European Union foreign ministers will discuss tougher sanctions against Russia on Monday, July 18, as Moscow is accused of using launchers to fire rockets from the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.

The governor of the Dnipro region Valentyn Reznichenko on Saturday denounced “a deluge of fire” on the territory of Nikopol with the launching of Grad rockets at residential areas. “Rescuers found two people dead under the ruins,” he said.

Among other things, EU ministers must examine a European Commission proposal to ban gold purchases from Russia in order to bring EU sanctions in line with those of their G7 partners. Another proposal aims to add new Russian personalities to the EU’s blacklist.

“Moscow has to continue to pay a high price for its aggression,” said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after submitting the new measures to the Twenty-Seven. No decision is expected during a first discussion in Brussels on these new sanctions, according to a senior European official.
