A ceasefire in Russia’s war against Ukraine could come in 2023, maybe mid-year, but not sooner. That is the prognosis of a former high-ranking Bundeswehr officer, a general who was also at the head of NATO. “I expect it in the summer when both sides say: ‘This is not going anywhere,'” said Hans-Lothar Domrose of the German media group Funke. According to the retired general, the most likely time for such a standoff will be between February and May. “This will be the time for ceasefire negotiations,” he added, stressing that it does not automatically mean the arrival of peace.
“Ceasefire means the attacks stop. The negotiations will probably take a long time, a mediator is needed,” emphasized the general, naming UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres or Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as possible names. A glimmer of hope for an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
