War in Ukraine: to avoid sanctions, Roman Abramovich’s megayacht took refuge in a marina in Montenegro

A mega-yacht owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, which has been sanctioned by Britain and Canada in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, arrived on Saturday in the Montenegrin bay on the Adriatic coast, according to AFP photographer.

The luxurious 140-meter yacht Solaris arrived in the Bay of Kotor in the morning and anchored at the Porto Montenegro pier in Tivat. According to the Montenegrin media, which in recent days have watched the route of the vessel on sites that allow maritime navigation, Solaris left the port of Barcelona on March 8.

The Solaris, which has its own helipad and its own missile detection system, would quickly sail away from the Catalan shipyard before repairs were completed. Staff were reportedly ordered to dismantle the scaffolding so the yacht could leave quickly.

Montenegro is not in the EU, although it is expected to join in 2025, and seems like a safer haven for Abramovich trying to sell Chelsea.

Vessel tracking sites such as Marine Traffic have previously shown the yacht heading around Sicily into the Ionian Sea, with its final destination unclear.

Abramovich’s second superyacht Eclipse, which is even bigger and reportedly worth over £750m, could also be heading to Tivat, which has a superyacht marina.
