The United States intends to speed up the shipment of tanks to Ukraine and has opted to send a less updated version of the Abrams, more quickly available tanks. This was reported by two American officials quoted by CNN: Choosing the Abrams M1-A1 instead of the more modern M1-A2 allows the tanks to be shipped as early as the fall, reducing times that could potentially last a year or even more . “We are working to expedite the delivery of the tanks,” US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said today.

Choosing the M1-A2 Abrams would have meant producing new tanks or updating the old version, as well as longer training times to use the complex digital targeting system. The United States has promised Ukraine to send 31 Abrams tanks to fuel the counteroffensive in the war with Russia.
