Even two veterans of the Vietnam War, two B-52 Stratofortresses, the USAF nuclear bombers par excellence that have been disappearing in the skies of the peninsula for a few months, arrived from Spain to fly over the Black Sea over Sicily. The gigantic 8-engine jets, the latest versions of the aircraft in service since 1955, also crossed paths with one of the Allied RAF’s (Royal Air Force) brand new aircraft, a Poseidon Boeing P-8A, a concentrate of electronic warfare apparatus that carried the Cell of 737 fills, addressed to Sigonella. An aircraft that, unlike the two bombers flying by, is directly involved in the maneuvers that have populated the skies over southern Italy and the central Mediterranean from the Ionian Sea to Malta and Sardinia in recent days.
Below these giants of the sky, on the one hand, still ahead of Sicily and Sardinia, the Russian frigate Ammiraglio Kasatanov, escorted by the supply ship Akademik Pashin, on the other hand the Italian frigate Carlo Margottini in the anti-submarine order (ASW), the frigate Carabiniere (F593), two submarines and two helicopters based in Catania, to name just a part of the Italian assets taking part in the final phase of the NATO exercise Dynamic Manta 2023, which for years has been the most important in of training are to face the submarines in particular. Maneuvers that in wartime in Ukraine become even more an opportunity for the Atlantic Pact to flex its muscles and remember that the Moscow fleet’s crossings must always be made respecting corridors and distances. Distance comparisons, which have always existed, but which have taken on a much more relevant meaning in the last year.
These days, NATO deploys five submarines belonging to the navies of Greece, Italy, Turkey and the United States, the commanders of which are under the control of the Atlantic Alliance Submarine Command. And then aircraft from Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States under the command of Rear Admiral (US Navy) Michael S. Sciretta, commander of NATO’s Second Permanent Naval Group. In addition to Sigonella, the Augusta and Catania bases are also involved. Operations will continue until tomorrow, March 10.
