Ukraine, Gualtieri: “Rome has opened its doors to the needy”
“Rome really is the city of hospitality. She was able to show her best thanks to the generosity of Roman men and women who did not hesitate to open the doors of their homes to those in need. The response to the tragedy of war in Ukraine sparked by Russian aggression by being included in the register of host families in Rome was moving.” The mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, writes it on Facebook. “It’s also nice that this experience has broadened, because there are so many people who are seeking refuge from hunger or oppression and who need help,” he adds. “One year after the start of this project with wide acceptance, it was nice to meet everyone” at the Campidoglio to share results, experiences and stories that touch the heart. Rome has thus been able to take advantage of this great asset, which is active citizenship, which must be increasingly involved. In fact, we hope to reinvigorate this experience and make it an international example as well. I want to sincerely thank all these families, the associations, the volunteers, Refugees Welcome Italia, Unicef Italia, Unhcr Italia – Onu Agency for Refugees, the Councilor Barbara Funari and the Department of Social Policy, the delegates Metropolis Tiziana Biolghini , the President of In Converti and all those who have done their utmost to offer shelter and concrete help to refugees. We are all a richer community today, a larger family that has grown without looking the other way, but we have had the courage to welcome rather than build walls, making Rome even more open, inclusive and welcoming.”
