Warning of increase in cases of meningococcal disease in Havana

A Cuban mother warns of a rise in meningo cases in Havana, information that has not been confirmed by the Ministry of Health.

The Cuban used social networks to alert other families to pay attention to their patients, since the diagnosis of meningo can be confused with other more common diseases, which can delay good treatment.

This was his testimony:

Good morning, yesterday my 9 year old girl was referred to the children’s hospital as it appeared she had dengue fever with warning symptoms. The symptoms are: fever or lack of temper, weakness, abdominal pain, headache accompanied by pain in the eyes. Due to the malaise due to exposure to light and vomiting, which worsened as the hours passed, I took her to the Naval Hospital where she underwent an appropriate physical examination , performed an ultrasound and a leukogram with platelet count, all of which came back positive, thus ruling out dengue fever. To my astonishment, and even worse because there was no diagnosis and her health had deteriorated quite a bit, the naval pediatrician told me that a Lumbar puncture had to be done because there was an increase in cases of meningo, in my girl’s case the result was positive for viral meningo. Thank God he gave wisdom to the doctor who treated her and quickly diagnosed my princess.

The Cuban assured that she had learned in the hospital that there was an increase in cases and therefore urged families to pay attention to the symptoms: “Be careful: there is a high percentage of meningo cases; If your child, a family member or a neighbor has symptoms and does not have a diagnosis, take them immediately to a children’s hospital where they can receive medical care and a diagnosis. Meningo is a contagious and dangerous disease.”
