Matthew’s love life was marred by his all-consuming addiction to alcohol and opioids, which affected his ability to find love and settle down before he tragically passed away on Saturday.

Over the years, the “Friends” star struggled with a years-long addiction to alcohol and opioids, which subsequently affected many of his romantic relationships.

This time last year, the “17 Again” star – who was spotted out for lunch in Malibu with a mystery brunette just last month – admitted he had been sober for an indefinite amount of time and admitted he was finally looking for a supportive one Looking for a partner he could build a life with.

He was never married, but proposed to literary agent Molly Hurwitz in 2020 after a two-year relationship, his last public relationship.

“You can only hold on to someone so much,” a close friend of Hurwitz’s, who was 22 years his junior, told In Touch around the time of their breakup. “He is in a really dark place and friends fear he may have relapsed.”

At the peak of his career, he had romantic relationships with many glamorous stars in Hollywood.

He had also attributed many of his short-lived romances to being “burned” by women who were only after his money.

In his memoir “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” published in November 2022, he spoke about his past relationships that were affected by his addiction.

He explained that because of his addiction, he only had short-term relationships and was unable to settle down with anyone for too long.

In his book, he discusses how he dated Julia Roberts for about a year from 1995 to 1996 and how he sabotaged their relationship by “dumping her” before she could leave him.

He wrote that he felt like he could “never be enough” for her.

“Dating Julia Roberts was too much for me,” he wrote in his book. “I was always sure she would break up with me.”

He had short-lived romances with stars such as Scream actress Neve Campbell, Cherry alumna Heather Graham and Baywatch star Yasmine Bleeth.

He also had a controversial two-year relationship with fashion student Rachel Dunn, who was 14 years his junior.

Matthew’s cause of death was announced on Sunday after news of his death shocked his global fan base.

The popular sitcom star died aged just 54 “after drowning in a hot tub at home,” sources told .

Law enforcement sources revealed that the actor was found in a Los Angeles home on Saturday after first responders were called to the scene for a cardiac arrest.

Sources claim he was found in the home’s hot tub, but no drugs were found at the scene and there was no evidence of crime.

The Los Angeles Times reported that authorities responded to his home around 4 p.m. and found him unresponsive.

A source told the outlet that there were signs of foul play and that Robbery and Homicide detectives were investigating his death.

In his latest post on Instagram, which he shared earlier this week, the star shared pictures of himself in his pool and said, “Oh, that warm water swirling around makes you feel good? ‘I’m Mattman.’

Perry opened up publicly about his problems with drugs and alcohol after first entering rehab for an alleged painkiller addiction following a jet ski accident in 1997.

After this first stay, he went to rehab again in 2001 and 2011. In an interview in 2016, he said that he didn’t remember filming three seasons of Friends.

A long-time friend of Perry’s who was in recovery with him told : “Everyone is in complete shock.” People are crying on the phone and struggling to accept this news.

“It’s no secret that he has struggled with drugs and alcohol for years, but the last time I spoke to him, which was a few weeks ago, he seemed to be doing well.”

“He was upbeat and sounded sober and positive.”
