“In response to the Russian Federation’s unjustified expulsion of two American diplomats from our embassy in Moscow, the State Department has done the same and declared two officials of the Russian embassy in the United States undesirable,” an American diplomatic spokesman said.

Russia announced on September 14 the expulsion of two American diplomats accused of serving as “liaison agents” for a former Russian employee arrested earlier this year and suspected of passing information to the United States about the conflict in Ukraine have.

Washington immediately promised to respond in a timely manner, which it did three weeks later.

These mutual expulsions come at a time when relations between Russia and the United States, one of the main financial and military backers of Ukraine, where Moscow has been waging an offensive since February 2022, have reached their lowest point.
