Watch: New trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind released

During a commercial break at Super Bowl LIV, Marvel Studios promised that the “Universe [was] broaden.” Back then, that meant canon streaming series like WandaVision and Loki were coming to Disney+, but the expansion tagline has since taken on a whole new meaning. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced animated shows, incorporated characters from Netflix projects into its blockbusters, and will air two live-action Disney+ specials later this year.

These one-off promotions include the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will see fans see Peter Quill and Co. in the MCU for the second time this year. Ahead of their two in-universe appearances, the Guardians will first appear at Disney World.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opens in Orlando, Florida at Walt Disney World’s EPCOT. The ride is described as “family friendly adventure” that characterizes them first reverse launch on a roller coaster.” Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has staged footage that will be included in the ride but insists it is “in his own universe.”

While the coaster’s cutscenes aren’t part of the MCU canon, a new trailer for Cosmic Rewind revealed an atmosphere straight out of the intergalactic franchise.

While the events of Cosmic Rewind exist outside of the MCU, the ride itself is straight out of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The Benatar is just like he was in Avengers: Endgame, a Bradley Cooper-esque voice comes out of Rocket’s mouth, and Peter Quill sports the same short hair that Chris Pratt is known for.

Quill being fully masked in Benatar is likely due to Pratt being unable to get filming scenes for this trailer. Using his red-eyed veil allows disbelief to be lifted, as Rocket and Groot can appear with full CGI exactly as they do in the MCU. Interestingly, Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and Glenn Close are all set to reprise their roles from the Guardians of the Galaxy films for the coaster, although no footage of these four actors has been released.

Speaking of Groot, the humanoid tree gets re-grown in this trailer. Fans haven’t seen the adult Groot since 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, where he sacrificed himself to save his newfound friends. The current MCU Groot is actually the son of the original Groot, as Confirmed by director James Gunn. The inclusion of an adult Groot in this ride emphasizes its placement outside of the MCU proper, but still gives fans a familiar face that hasn’t been present in almost a decade.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is out May 27 at Disney World’s EPCOT.
