Water damage: A tenant in Quebec City has been experiencing a ‘nightmare’ for the past two weeks.

A Quebec tenant who suffered water damage two weeks ago has lamented the inaction of her landlord, who still hasn’t made the repairs, raising concerns about renewed flooding.

Marie-Claude Simon woke up in her apartment on July 2 to find the floor of her living room and kitchen covered with water, the drain broken and her ceiling punctured.

This is the third water damage at this address in eight years, but the owner is delaying the necessary repairs to ensure such events don’t happen again.

“I think it’s unimaginable to let a tenant live in such a situation,” says Ms. Simon. I’m just discouraged, that’s the only word I can say. I do not know what to do.”

“For the last two weeks I have been unable to sleep because I wake up with a shock and a panic, wondering if there is more water damage and if there is a leak. It’s not relaxing,” she adds.

The tenant describes the situation as “like she doesn’t have a roof”, which means that rain can easily penetrate her apartment.

Above all, the heavy rains on Thursday gave him new headaches.

“I came back from a dinner with friends, which was a wonderful evening,” she said. When I got here, water was leaking everywhere, the bins were full, I called my sister in a panic and was so discouraged that I cried for my life. I just felt like leaving everything behind and raiding my camp.”

“I say to myself: what are you waiting for? That the ceiling breaks?” she continues.

The Quebec City resident also says he had to take several days off work to ensure the water infiltration didn’t cause further damage.

The property owner did not respond to our interview requests.
