Water emergency is coming to South

Due to persistent drought, daytime irrigation is also prohibited in South Tyrol. The measure is valid until it is revoked.

It started in the Po region, where it hasn’t rained for months. Due to the lack of water in the northern regions of Italy, the government decided to declare a state of emergency. Large parts of Italy’s longest river have dried up in recent weeks, so the drought can be clearly seen and felt in the areas around the river.

Agriculture in northern Italy, in particular, is struggling with the effects of the drought. Such a state of emergency has not existed in the last 70 years. Several large Italian cities such as Milan, Venice and Turin have restricted their water use to essential services.

Now this water emergency is spreading further and further north. As the Tyrolean “ORF” reports, a state of emergency has also been declared in the catchment area of the Adige River, which rises near the Reschen Pass in the Ötztal Alps. Governor Arno Kompatscher (SVP) signed a corresponding ordinance with savings measures.

Watering prohibited

Irrigation of green areas is prohibited daily from 9 am to 8 pm. Water should be saved in this way, especially in agriculture, in parks and gardens. Those who use water are encouraged to reduce consumption to a minimum.

In the south of the country, in the Bolzano region, the risk of forest fires is also increasing rapidly. “While there has been an average of about 20 forest fires a year for the last 20 years, this year there were more than 40,” said Arnold Schuler (SVP), Provincial Councilor for Forests, according to “ORF Tirol”.
