“We respect our opponent more this year” – Jonathan Marchessault

The Stanley Cup Grand Final begins Saturday night and with 24 hours to go before the opening game against the Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault was extremely generous and agreed to do an interview with Jean-Charles Lajoie.

For the former Quebec Remparts, this is a second opportunity to get their hands on the prized trophy. In 2018, Vegas had lowered the flag in front of the Washington Capitals.

When asked how he would approach this new opportunity, Marchessault gave an interesting answer.

“Back then we were playing Washington and thought it was going to be easy. They had never won the trophy. I would tell you that this year we have a lot more respect for our opponent. Personally, I approach this final with much more humility and maturity than in 2018.

“He’s an exceptional player”

Marchessault was also asked to comment on the great chemistry he’s developed with Jack Eichel over the past few weeks and the number 81 wasn’t shy about throwing flowers at his talented team-mate.

“It took a few more weeks for us to find cohesion. I played with the same two players for five years prior to this year. But Jack is an exceptional player. He’s so patient with the puck, so skillful, so quick. It is very easy to play with him.

In 17 playoff games, Jonathan Marchessault has 17 points, including nine goals.
