“We went there to celebrate our 10th birthday”: Crushed by a tree during a romantic motorcycle ride in the US

A 56-year-old motorcycle enthusiast tragically died in the US last week when a tree fell on her on the road while they were out on a romantic trip to celebrate their 10-year anniversary together.

“It’s better that she’s gone. She would have suffered from it for the rest of her life,” breathes Patrick Lavergne, still devastated almost a week after the unfortunate accident that killed his wife, Angela Di Meo, on July 5.

The day before, the couple from Estrie had made their way to New Hampshire despite the rainy and overcast weather.

“On July 3, 2013 we started living together. We wanted to go there to celebrate our 10th birthday,” says the 65-year-old. We slept in a motel near Mount Washington.”

The next day, around 11:20 a.m., the lovers were driving in a single file “at about 55 miles an hour” down tree-lined Highway 112 in the middle of a national forest near the small town of Lincoln.

“It was sunny,” recalls Mr. Lavergne.

Suddenly he lost communication with the headset of his loved one who was following him.

“I looked backwards. I didn’t see her,” he recalls.

The computer technician then quickly turned around until he saw his wife lying on the ground next to his white Honda motorcycle.

Through terrible bad luck, a rotting tree fell in the middle of the road and landed directly on the road, confirms Deputy Director Scott McKinley of the Lincoln Police Department.

“It’s terrible, the memories I have of it. I tried to take his pulse. She didn’t have any more,” her visibly fragile husband admits to the scene.

It would even have been difficult for the witnesses who tried to help the victim to describe the events to him, it was so unusual.

“You see that in the movies right now,” describes Mr. Lavergne. It wasn’t a wrong maneuver. The tree fell on her.”

More beautiful roads…

The motorcycle enthusiast who had dreams of riding a sport bike had just completed refresher courses over the past week.

“She was afraid. Her companion assures her that she had all the equipment, from head to toe. But she was no beginner.

In addition, five years ago, the parents of two children each had settled in Lac-Brome to be closer to the United States.

“We used to go there often. The streets are nicer. We thought it wiser,” continues Mr. Lavergne, aware of the sad irony.

After the accident, the future pensioner, whose plans for the future had just been reversed, insisted on returning home alone on his motorcycle.

“I cried. I screamed murder. No one heard me. But it did me good,” says the man, who traveled almost 20,000 kilometers a year on his motorcycle with his wife, who is known for her friendliness and joie de vivre .

“We made lunch. “We preferred to stop at the roadside, in the middle of the countryside, rather than at restaurants,” explains Mr. Lavergne. In four years we wanted to live in Texas in the winter and here in the summer.

“If Plan B [compagnie fictive, qui offre la possibilité de modifier le cours des évènements dans une série télé] existed, I would have put it on my card a long time ago.
