Guillermo Francos explains that the relationship between the two countries “goes beyond personal positions”
Guillermo Francos, main coordinator of the election campaign of Argentine presidential candidate Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza), said a possible rightwing victory would not affect relations with Brazil. According to him, the connection between countries “stands above personal positions.”
On November 8, Milei called President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) a “communist” and “corrupt.” He said that if elected he would not meet with the Brazilian. “Just as President Lula demonstrated against Milei, Milei also demonstrated against Lula. However, this will not have any impact on relations between the countries,” Francos explained in an interview with CNN Brasil published on Wednesday (11/15/2023).
According to Francos, “many discrepancies” surrounding Milei’s opinion on Lula have already been resolved. “I have spoken to the Brazilian authorities to clarify some concepts that have been raised very loudly during the election campaign,” he said.
“The relationship between Brazil and Argentina will always be positive. We are destined to be permanent members. We won’t have a problem with that,” he added.
Milei will face current Argentine Economy Minister Sergio Massa in the second round of Argentina’s presidential election on Sunday (November 19). The Peronist was ahead in the first round of voting on October 22nd with 36.68% of the valid votes, compared to 29.98% for Milei.
