Weapons to Ukraine, the League distances itself from the Prime Minister: "We need a peaceful solution"

When it comes to weapons for Ukraine, the league distances itself from the prime minister and offers support to the opposition. Today in the Senate Chamber, the discussion of the legislative decree on the “sale of military means, materials and equipment for the benefit of the government authorities of Ukraine” is scheduled, and among the documents attached to the text, an agenda stands out from the Lega Nord, which calls on the government “ “to take a concrete and timely initiative in the relevant European bodies aimed at developing a diplomatic path in order to seek a rapid resolution of the conflict”. A position that follows that of the Democratic Party, which makes its support for Kiev conditional on a diplomatic action for which both the Italian government and the European institutions should be spokesmen.

The text, signed by group leader Massimiliano Romeo, states: “The 23 months of fighting have made it clear that neither side is capable of achieving a decisive military victory over the other and that this is therefore impossible.” Remember an exclusively military solution. Therefore, “it is important to develop a vision of how the war will end.”

However, Matteo Salvini's party also recalls that “the international community's numerous efforts towards the Ukrainian people have so far proven essential, but not sufficient, to neutralize the Russian threat.” We read that Moscow has “evaded Western sanctions and strengthened partnerships with countries in the Global South (North Korea, China, Iran) that pose a threat to the current geopolitical balance.” In short, according to the Northern League, the plan to isolate Russia did not work. For this reason, Romeo calls for a change in strategy, taking into account that “even Italian public opinion no longer fully supports the military aid that our country continues to send in support of the Ukrainian army, hoping for a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the conflict”.
