November 2023 – Icelandic police evacuated Grindavik, a fishing village in the southwest of the island, after growing legal concerns about a possible volcanic eruption, prompting civil protection authorities to declare a state of emergency in the area. Authorities also raised the air warning to orange, indicating an increased risk of a volcanic eruption.
Law enforcement’s decision came after recent seismic activity in the area shifted south toward the city in early November and monitoring revealed a magma corridor now extends beneath the city. The city with 3,400 inhabitants is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 50 kilometers southwest of the capital Reykjavik. The VIDEO high.
