Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
The superhero sequel from Disney and Marvel Studios debuted at $114.0 million. That’s in the middle of Boxoffice PRO’s pre-release guidance, which was in the $105 million to $125 million range.
It is +20% above 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy ($94.3M) but -22% below 2017’s sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5M).
Vol. 3 deserves the #58 opening weekend ever.
It’s also #17 all-time in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) – in the bottom half of the MCU in that regard.
The estimated target demographic was 60% male and 52% over 25 years old. These numbers are both comparable to February’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (61% male and 53% aged 25+).
Overseas
Vol. 3 opened at $168.1 million overseas and $282.1 million worldwide, led by $28.1 million in China.
A comparison to Vol. 2 would not be accurate as this film had a staggered launch to international markets from late April 2017.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
weekend
After four consecutive frames at the top, Universal’s animated video game adaptation finally falls back to second place, falling -54% to $18.6 million and second place.
The performance was strong enough to make it the No. 17’s fifth weekend ever. Mario now also earns his fifth all-time animated weekend at #3.

That was below Boxoffice PRO’s pre-release forecast, which was in the $9 million to $17 million range.
This weekend, it falls -49% to $3.3M and fourth place.
That’s steeper than the -38% drop in year two for The Edge of Seventeen, a similar teenage theme from 2016 also written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig.
Sisu
Last weekend, Lionsgate’s R-rated action thriller debuted in tenth place with $3.3 million. Sisu only played in 1,006 theaters, less than a third of the most widely distributed releases on the market.
