Weekend Read: The slowdown in the housing market and the reversal of the yield curve suggest a future recession

It’s human nature to be afraid to miss as prices soar, but eventually all the bubbles burst.

Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics predicts that US home sales will decline by 25%. What does it do to the price? Consider your thoughts.

Classic signal of recession

On March 24, the 5-year Treasury yield was 2.40% and the 7-year Treasury yield was 2.43%. Both were higher than the Treasury bond yield of 2.38% for 10 years. Generally, the longer the maturity, the higher the yield on bonds with similar credit risk.

  • In the Market Extra column, Viven Lou Chen explains how the reverse yield curve indicates a recession.

  • Vijay Modhavdia, Managing Director of Deuterium Capital Advisors, explains why the signs of a recession have reduced his exposure to financial equities by 50%.

  • When interest rates go up, bond prices go down. As part of the In One Chart series, Steve Goldstein shows that bond prices are accelerating towards the worst bear market since 1949.

  • William Watts explains why the stock market didn’t deteriorate as the Federal Reserve suggested a more aggressive rate hike.

Counterarguments against bank stocks

The yield curves for 5-year, 7-year, and 10-year bonds have reversed, but the difference between the yield curves for 3-month government bonds and 2-year bonds has widened significantly. This is good news for banks. The cost of deposits remains low and loans are re-priced at higher interest rates.

ClearBridge’s Sam Peters claims bank stocks because of the improved profitability of the industry and the continued high quality of credit.
