On Tuesday afternoon, officials from the police inspection of Weißenkirchen in the Wachau noticed a badly damaged car with Ukrainian license plate on the B3 in the local area of Wösendorf. As reported by the Lower Austria State Police Headquarters (LPD) on Thursday, “the windshield of the car was cracked and the rear windows and rear window were covered with plastic wrap”. The officers stopped the vehicle in Spitz.
The driver, a 30-year-old Ukrainian, fled with Mariupol’s wife and parents by car on May 14 via Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the Czech Republic. As a travel destination, people indicated the domicile of their acquaintances in Italy. As the police reported in their broadcast, the vehicle had multiple bullet holes and shrapnel damage. The officers could not have allowed the vehicle to continue its journey and the necessary repairs were beyond the family’s financial means.
Weißenkirchner police contacted the company Birngruber Krems. Their branch manager, Benjamin Braun, agreed to repair the damaged vehicle free of charge. Weißenkirchen Mayor Christian Geppner was also contacted. He arranged accommodation and meals for the night at his mother Inge’s guest house in Spitz.
The family of four and their two dogs only had a small amount of cash on hand. According to the police, since the escape they had slept in parking lots or in refugee shelters. After the repairs, they were able to continue their trip to Italy on Wednesday at no cost.
