Western Australian PM leaves country with ‘I’m exhausted’ ANSA news agency

Popular Western Australian Prime Minister Mark McGowan unexpectedly announced his retirement from politics, saying he was “exhausted” during a press conference announced just 45 minutes in advance. “The truth is I’m tired, extremely tired and even exhausted,” said 55-year-old McGowan, who was elected president of Australia’s largest and most mineral-rich state by a large majority in 2017.

The politician had been re-elected for a second term in 2021, had won 52 of the 59 seats in the House of Commons and had drastically multiplied the consensus with his decision to completely close state borders amid the Covid pandemic and reduce infections. Stress, sleepless nights and political controversy have taken their toll, he told the media, adding he no longer has “the energy or drive” to lead the party in the upcoming March 2025 state election. McGowan will hand in his resignation from office and will leave Parliament by the end of the week. “I’m going to take a break for a while. Once I’ve rested and recovered, I’ll look for something to do,” he added.
