OLED is the technology that we now find in everything that has a screen: smartphones, televisions, laptops and even consoles like the Nintendo Switch or the new Steam Deck. Initially some were skeptical due to some issues, but it looks like OLED has proven itself.

OLED screens have had a bad reputation due to “burn-in,” where an image gets stuck on the screen if it is displayed for too long. But today it is less and less worrying.
Check out the Switch OLED: YouTuber Wulff Den tested it for two years, and it took that long to really see visible traces. After 150 days there was hardly anything visible at first and even after a year and 50 days it was not noticeable.

What Wulff Den did with the Switch isn’t really what we consider normal usage. He left the console running the same game non-stop. Really, who does that? We usually change games, put the console in standby mode… In short: the test shows that the Switch’s OLED screen is quite robust. After around 18,000 hours, the screen is still holding up, which surprised even Wulff Den.

Switch OLED: better than we thought
Basically, even for gamers who play eight hours a day, the Switch’s OLED screen should last at least six years. And the burn-in effect is, to be honest, not that serious. Wulff Den continued to play other games without it bothering him. To have a truly annoying problem, you would have to use the console to a really extreme extent.

OLED has developed significantly in recent years. Experts say these screens could last 100 years if the blue component problem was solved. The Wulff-Den test shows that this is more than sufficient for normal use. And nothing else failed during his test: neither the battery nor the fan.
