The next GTA game on Netflix? The idea isn’t all that crazy and was described in an article in the Wall Street Journal this week.
What if the next episode of Grand Theft Auto was meant for the Netflix platform? The idea may seem crazy to you, but it is actually quite concrete and does not necessarily concern the 6th part, which everyone is eager to discover. Currently, you know that for two years now, the SVOD platform has been redoubling its efforts to develop its gaming offering, which is also focused on mobile devices. However, the giant would also intend to offer more high-end productions and He even reportedly discussed acquiring a license for a Grand Theft Auto game. This idea was revealed in a new report from the very reputable Wall Street Journal. The company would therefore consider offering a GTA game whose title or level of completion has not been specified by the media. Of course, we imagine a spin-off dedicated to mobile or even other distribution platforms. Because yes, the WSJ also reminds that the company is “taking steps to expand into high-end games that can be streamed from TVs or computers.” An initiative currently limited to Canada and the United Kingdom. As part of this experimental phase, which was already publicly developed this summer, Netflix is introducing two games to its users: “Oxenfree” and “Molehew’s Mining Adventure”.
Netflix currently includes more than 50 game titles for free as a subscription, which are only available on smartphones and tablets. In addition to a series of mobile adaptations of its programs, the catalog also offers other popular games already released on other platforms, such as Oxenfree, Immortality, Kentucky Route Zero or Spiritfarer. Recently, the company also welcomed anticipated sequels such as Oxenfree II: Lost Signals and Unknown Soldiers: Brothers in Arms and is entering into a full collaboration with Ubisoft.
A company struggling to get off the ground
The WSJ points out that Netflix hopes to maintain its presence in the video game space to attract new subscribers and justify increasing subscription prices. He cites figures from the app tracker Apptopia that indicate downloads of Netflix games rose from 30.4 million to 70.5 million last year. Figures that still need to be put into perspective, with IGN recalling that Honkai: Star Rail alone was downloaded more than 20 million times on the day of its release at the beginning of the year. In fact, less than 1% of Netflix’s 238 million subscribers play these games daily. An analyst interviewed by the broadcaster says Netflix has spent around $1 billion on games so far and it’s unclear whether that investment will ever pay off.
