Artificial intelligence (AI) research firm OpenAI on Wednesday announced ChatGPT, a prototype conversational AI chatbot capable of understanding natural language and responding in natural language. Since then, it’s taken the internet by storm, and people marvel at how intelligent the AI-powered bot sounds. Some have even called it a surrogate for Google, being able to give “direct answers” to complex problems, almost like a personal know-it-all teacher.
“We trained a model called ChatGPT that interacts in a conversational way. The dialog format allows ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge false premises, and deny inappropriate requests,” OpenAI wrote on its announcement page for ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is based on GPT-3.5, a language model that uses deep learning to create human-like text. However, while the older GPT-3 model only accepted text prompts and attempted to continue them with its own generated text, ChatGPT is more responsive. It is much better at generating detailed texts and even boasts poetry. Another unique feature is memory. The bot can remember previous comments in a conversation and retell them to the user.
