Like Ukraine, Moldova is a former Soviet republic. Formerly known as Bessarabia, the region was a province of the Russian Empire until after the First World War, and then became part of Greater Romania.

The Soviet Union annexed Bessarabia in 1940 and combined it with the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldova, forming the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. The Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic is one of the 15 republics of the Soviet Union that existed from 1940-1991.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the republic declared independence and became known as Moldova. He became a member of the United Nations in 1992.

Lukashenko’s map ostensibly shows that Russia is invading Transnistria, a breakaway state of Moldova dominated by Russian loyalists. Transnistria is internationally recognized as part of Moldova.

BELARUSIAN PRESIDENT LUKASHENKO SEEMS TO STAND IN FRONT OF MOLDOVA’S COUNTRY’S PLANNED LOCATION MAP: REPORTS

Russian troops have been stationed in Transnistria since the region seceded from Moldova in 1992, and are said to have served as peacekeepers. The narrow piece of land where about 400,000 people live, became titles in 2014 when Russia invaded Crimea. Transnistrian officials and activists pleaded for the territory to join Russia, but Russia felt it was not in their interest.

Lukashenko’s military card also raised fears that Belarus would join Russia in invading Ukraine. Ukraine’s parliament said on Tuesday that Belarus had sent troops to Ukraine, but Belarus’s president – who called himself “Europe’s last dictator” – denied the report.
