Switching from Trey Lance back to Jimmy Garoppolo wasn’t difficult for the San Francisco 49ers. Teammates know Garoppolo, who has been the Niners’ starting quarterback since the final games of the 2017 season.

Garoppolo returned in a backup role this season. However, Lance’s injury at the end of the season (head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed today that it was indeed a season-ending event) catapulted the veteran quarterback back into the starting XI.

A reporter asked a 49ers player about Lance’s move to Garoppolo.

“I’d just like to start by not wanting to downplay our feelings for Trey,” full-back Kyle Juszczyk said in the dressing room ahead of Wednesday’s training session. “That was our type. We wish he was still out here doing his thing, but it’s been a good transition. And admittedly it’s been two days so from what we’ve experienced so far it’s been fine and seamless. I mean, Jimmy was our quarterback here. This is like his sixth year so you would expect him to be familiar and know what we’re doing.

When players learned that Garoppolo would return for another season, some were shocked. After all, everyone assumed the quarterback would play somewhere else in 2022. Garoppolo didn’t practice with the team, didn’t attend meetings, and didn’t even have a playbook in hand until after the 49ers’ final preseason game.

The players didn’t understand how Garoppolo’s return was possible. But when Shanahan came up with the plan, everyone was on board. The quarterback is a favorite in the locker room, after all.

Garoppolo joined his teammates on the practice field for the first time on September 1 – as QB2. That was strange for some.

“In the beginning it was definitely different to see him in this backup role,” said Juszczyk. “But even then I still remember the first practice he was here; You noticed Jimmy right away, just his presence and his command. “

On Sunday night, Garoppolo will lead the 49ers into Empower Field at Mile High for a Week 3 matchup against Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos.

‘Like riding a bike’: 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo and Kyle Shanahan discuss unexpected quarterback changes after Trey Lance’s injury

It’s been a long, strange journey for Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers, and things got even stranger on Sunday when he found himself back under center after an apparent season-ending injury to starting quarterback Trey Lance. Garoppolo has been with the 49ers since he was traded from the New England Patriots in 2017. He led an unexpected late-season rise after the trade that saw the 49ers finish with five straight wins — a streak that sparked newfound optimism in a franchise so complete that it began earlier this year with the hiring of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch after firing head coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke after a 2-14 season in 2016. But that optimism quickly evaporated in 2018, when

What Broncos Coach Nathaniel Hackett Said About Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers’ defensive and running game

Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett joined a conference call with reporters and shared his perspective on the upcoming Week 3 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. Here are some of the topics he touched on. What do you see in quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo? “So much experience fighting him, so much respect for him and his game,” Hackett said. “He has an amazing release. He has the ability to get the ball out quickly. He makes quick, quick decisions. I mean he’s a very good soccer player who has had a lot of success. I think I was in Jacksonville in 2017 [went to the 49ers], and he actually beat us there towards the end of the season. We were I think 10-and-4 or something like that and he came out

PFF: Why the 49ers keep Jimmy Garoppolo doesn’t mean they don’t trust Trey Lance

Unless you follow the San Francisco 49ers daily and look inside from the outside, it’s easy to see that the team bringing back quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has no faith in Trey Lance. However, for those who have been following the offseason quarterback drama more closely, there are fewer concerns. It’s hard to resist the opinion of others that the 49ers Lance appear less committed than they would have been had they traded or sacked Garoppolo. Understandably, Pro Football Focus’ Doug Kyed thinks Lance’s leash is shorter when a proven winner like Garoppolo is on the sidelines. However, he believes the 49ers will stick with their 22-year-old quarterback barring injuries, and the goal remains to trade Garoppolo if a quarterback is needed elsewhere in the NFL. So why
