[EN VIDÉO] Are our smartphones killing insects? Insects are under serious threat from pesticides, urbanization and intensive agriculture. But the waves from cell phones could also harm them.
It’s a tradition at Google: a few months after its release, each flagship of the Pixel smartphone series receives a variant symbolized by a “small” a. There was the Pixel 3a, 4a, 5a and since July 21st it is possible to order the Pixel 6a.
As the name suggests, it’s the little brother of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, and Google has opted to keep the same design with that distinctive stripe on the back of the device. It’s chunky, even unsightly, but at the same time offers good stability when you place the smartphone on a table.
Some similarities with the Pixel 6
In terms of similarities, there’s also the Google-developed Tensor processor, the under-screen fingerprint reader backed by the Titan M2 chip, and 5G compatibility. For the photo part, argument number 1 of the pixels, Google has chosen to mix what made the success of its previous devices. So the Pixel 6’s 8-megapixel front camera is still there. The same goes for the 12 million pixel wide-angle sensor. On the other hand, the main sensor goes from 50 to 12 million pixels. It’s the same sensor as the Pixel 5a. The good news is that artificial intelligence is in play for photo correction as well as magic eraser tool.
On the screen side, there’s a reduction too, as it’s a 6.1-inch Oled screen that refreshes at 60Hz versus a 6.4-inch Oled panel with a 90Hz refresh rate on the case Pixel 6. The screen technology is also different with Gorilla Glass Victus for the Pixel 6 versus Gorilla Glass 3 for its little brother. It is a bit more vulnerable when the device is dropped or scratched. Keep in mind that the Pixel 6 Pro has an even larger screen: 6.7 inches diagonally updated at 120Hz.
A reduced price and a free gift until August 1st
In the game of seven differences, we also notice that the battery is slightly modified as it goes from 4,616mAh for the Pixel 6 to 4,410mAh. Since the refresh rate of the screen is lower, it should not be felt in terms of autonomy. In terms of general performance, however, the increase from 8 to 6 GB should make itself felt in the speed of photo editing or when using several applications at the same time. For data storage, mainly videos and photos, it will be 128GB without the possibility of doubling the capacity, which is the case with the Pixel 6.
The very good news is the price: only 459 euros. It costs £200 less than the Pixel 6 and is the price of a mid-range smartphone but with some high-end features. The other good news is that for all orders placed before August 1st, Google is giving away the $99 Pixel Buds A-Series wireless headphones, which we praised during our testing. .
