Kusturica’s only foray into American cinema (Underground) tells the story of Johnny Depp moving to his uncle Jerry Lewis’ ranch and forming a relationship with the mature and alluring Faye Dunaway. Under this premise, the filmmaker presents his special vision of the American dream, wrapped in images of fascinating beauty. A slightly unbalanced script does not detract from the merits of a film whose main attraction is originality.

Wolfgang Petersen is an oddball director capable of directing a horror film like Air Force One and later a demonstration of storytelling like The Perfect Storm. In this case, it shows that a commercial film doesn’t have to be an amusement park, delivering a highly serious and cash-strapped intrigue centered on the character of a Clint Eastwood scarred by his past: he was part of the bodyguard team protecting Kennedy on day of his assassination.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Stanley Kramer got his big break producing the films The Clay Idol and High Noon. He later combined this facet with that of directing, a job at which Winners or Losers excels, one of the first Hollywood films to openly denounce the Holocaust, is the masterpiece of an ever-engaged artist. Kramer’s producing soul knew the film had to have an electrifying cast: so he surrounded himself with a cast of immense quality (note the brief but stunning intervention of Montgomery Clift) and managed to pull off the legendary trial of them “Nazi War Criminals” became a gripping drama with unstoppable dramatic development.

The radical nature and provocative power of Joseph Losey’s early films made him one of the filmmakers to leave the United States, pursued by Hollywood’s infamous witch hunt. The filmmaker went into exile in Britain and produced a handful of great films that continued to demonstrate his ability to challenge societal conventions and portray characters stricken with bitterness. Alongside King and Country, The Servant is the pinnacle of cinema from an always attentive and committed director. The relationship between two men from different social classes shows Losey that bondage can well be a state of mind, rooted in an oppressive society of masters and servants.
