A horrifying portrayal of the 2008 financial crisis centered on a group of mutual fund specialists who foresaw the disaster and knew how to capitalize on it. Its cadence, which is as fast as it is powerful, and some dialogues in the rhythm of a machine gun shock the viewer.

In its time, El Crack was quite the event, and while it hasn’t aged well (especially on its humorous note), its best moments come from the vehemence Garci pours into his imagery. His homage to the film noir is still moving in many sequences, as is his Madrid portrait with a memorable Alfredo Landa transformed into an authentic transcript by Bogart.

“Memories of Africa”

Out of Africa is Sydney Pollack’s last major film, whose career came to an end in the 1990s. This adaptation of the Danish writer Isak Dinesen’s memoirs grows thanks to the courage of the director who, using a memorable photograph by David Watkin, recreates the modes of classic cinema and draws a romantic story around two characters, in which looks erase the words representing the two different ways of thinking understanding of life and love.

A married couple takes the sole survivor of a strange shipwreck on their boat. Ah, the subject will hide more than meets the eye. The total tranquility suffers from a staging that doesn’t extract all the intensity from a claustrophobic story, although some sequences reach great tension. Nicole Kidman wasn’t a star yet, but she was already showing her great talent.

The film reveals his healthy boldness, yes, but also his determination to paint a clear and aggressive critique of a dehumanized world.

The film is graced by a superb collection of songs by Dietz and Schwartz and unforgettable musical numbers by Fred Astaire and the ethereal Cyd Charisse, the most elegant couple the dancer has ever had.

Twenty years later, it’s Lola Flores’ turn as a mischievous gypsy girl who roams the streets with her uncle. A production steeped in folklore and hopelessly aged of course, but a fine example of the cinema of an era shot with professionalism and conviction. Lola Flores gives her charisma and Fernán-Gómez her acting category.
