‘Crack’

Spain, 1981 (128 minutes). Directed by Jose Luis García. Cast: Alfredo Landa, Manuel Tejada, Maria Casanova, Miguel Rellán.

In its time, El Crack was quite the event, and while it hasn’t aged well (especially on its humorous note), its best moments come from the vehemence Garci pours into his imagery. His homage to the film noir is still moving in many sequences, as is his Madrid portrait with a memorable Alfredo Landa transformed into an authentic transcript by Bogart.

‘complete rest’

1674189385 820 Whats on TV today Friday January 20 2023

dead quiet. USA, 1988 (92 minutes). Directed by Phillip Noyce. Cast: Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman, Billy Zane.

A married couple takes the sole survivor of a strange shipwreck on their boat. Ah, the subject will hide more than meets the eye. The total tranquility suffers from a staging that doesn’t extract all the intensity from a claustrophobic story, although some sequences reach great tension. Nicole Kidman wasn’t a star yet, but she was already showing her great talent.

‘Brazil’

United Kingdom-USA, 1985 (137 minutes). Directed by Terry Gilliam. Cast: Jonathan Pryce, Robert de Niro, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin.

Terry Gilliam, Monty Python’s shadow leader, uses his talents in a maddening and riveting parody of a future society bureaucratized to the core. Inspired by the universe created by Orwell in 1984, Gilliam unleashes a torrent of black humor wrapped in a staging that finds its stylistic protagonist in the Baroque. The film reveals his healthy boldness, yes, but also his determination to paint a clear and aggressive critique of a dehumanized world.

The popular comedy of Quintero and Guillén was adapted for the big screen back in 1934 by Florián Rey in an interesting film directed by Imperio Argentina. Twenty years later, it’s Lola Flores’ turn as a mischievous gypsy girl who roams the streets with her uncle. A production steeped in folklore and hopelessly aged of course, but a fine example of the cinema of an era shot with professionalism and conviction. Lola Flores gives her charisma and Fernán-Gómez her acting category.

absolute power. USA, 1996 (116 minutes). Director: Clint Eastwood. Cast: Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris

Absolute power doesn’t quite reach the heights of Eastwood pinnacles like Unforgiven or Mystic River, but the filmmaker knows how to infuse sharp edges into an almost conventional intrigue surrounding a murdered corporate thief. Thus he traces a bitter and disillusioned reflection on the shadows of power and ambition.
